We, the faculty of the Political Science Department, appreciate UMass Boston’s decisive response to move classes online during the COVID-19 crisis. Doing so saved lives and allowed for some continuity of student investment in the Spring 2020 semester. Moving forward, however, the lesson of this crisis is not that online education is substitute for face-to-face pedagogy. When safe, we look forward to the face-to-face classroom experiences, face-to-face student advising sessions, and the intellectual vibrancy of our diverse on-campus community. The lesson of this pandemic is that this community will rapidly adapt to a crisis, but the brick and mortar university experience is our mainstay and mission.
