These advanced writing and thinking skills support careers in teaching, publishing, law, film, journalism, the arts, communications, mental health, and business. The English Major centers on the critical study and interpretation of literature, language, and culture. Students study literature and other cultural products written in English, and develop their critical and aesthetic understanding through research and writing. The curriculum includes coursework in creative writing, film, and world literatures written in or translated into English. Students who wish to pursue P-12 teacher certification in English must apply to and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program.
